Frustrated politicians are to renew demands for full dualling of the killer A1 through Northumberland - although the chances of major improvements in the next 10 years appear increasingly remote.

The long-running issue of upgrading the Morpeth to Berwick section of the road - described yesterday as an "absolute national scandal" by a senior councillor - has resurfaced following critical comments made last week by north Northumberland coroner Tony Brown.

Speaking after inquests into two accidents which claimed the lives of three drivers on single-lane stretches of the road, he said further preventable deaths were inevitable unless the 45-mile stretch was made continuous dual carriageway.

Berwick Rangers' dismal record in cup competitions this season continued in the Highlands as they made their exit from the Scottish Cup at the first hurdle, with First Division Ross County completing a nap hand at Victoria Park in Dingwall.

Plans to light up a historic rail bridge to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its creator's death look set to be given the green light.

A working group set up by Berwick History Society has this year organised a series of events to mark the anniversary of the death in 1859 of Robert Stephenson, the great railway engineer and architect and son of pioneer George Stephenson.

Robert Stephenson helped shape the Northumberland town's landscape with his greatest work considered by many to be the designing of the iconic 28-arch Royal Border Bridge carrying the main East Coast rail line across the Tweed from Tweedmouth to Berwick. It was opened in August 1850 by Queen Victoria.

Two gas engineers from Northumberland have won praise for their efforts in flood-hit Cumbria.

Kevin Knox from Berwick and Brian Illingworth from Blyth work for United Utilities on behalf of Northern Gas Networks.

Their normal operating area covers Tyneside and Northumberland but they were asked to assist Cumbrian colleagues.

Theatre group touring wintery tale

Northumberland Theatre Company (NTC) is to take The Last Snow Rider by Ann Coburn round village halls and small arts centres across the country this winter, beginning tonight.

The play will be at Etal Village Hall on the 18th December at 6.30pm and at St Paul's Church Hall in Spittal for a 1.30pm matinee performance on 6th January.

The cast includes NTC regulars Kim Evans and Gemma Clough and newcomers William Reay from Bellingham and Christopher Ranson.

A planning application for a major housing development at the mouth of the Tweed at Berwick is expected to go before Northumberland County Council early in the New Year.

A development company headed by former Berwick businessman William Leith is applying for permission to build 136 houses at Spittal Point.

Fresh fears were voiced yesterday over the perils facing motorists on the A1 in Northumberland following a head-on smash which claimed the lives of two drivers.

North Northumberland coroner Tony Brown said the A1 from Morpeth to Berwick was the "weakest link" in the road between London and Edinburgh because of its dangerous mixture of single and dual carriageway sections.

He predicted there will be more preventable deaths in the future unless the road is given a higher priority for upgrading and dualling.

Road safety sessions for young drivers have been held in Berwick.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police held events for groups of 17- to 25-year-olds on November 16 and 23.

The sessions were attended by students from local schools and colleges as well as drivers who have just passed their test.

Berwick take points from controversial game

South Shields United have lost their last three games and were surprisingly beaten 4-3 by hosts Berwick United in Division One of the Pin Point Recruitment Northern Alliance.

In a game punctuated by controversial incidents, South Shields suffered a blow after only 15 minutes when they had Jonny Gage sent off for allegedly throwing a punch.

Mike Robinson opened the scoring for the Borderers amid strong claims for offside, and just after the break the same player nabbed his second.
