Continuing last week's coastal theme, Environment Editor Tony Henderson talks to an artist who knows every nook and cranny along the region's shoreline.

When artist Ron Thornton read last Saturday's report in The Journal about a pioneering management plan to protect the Northumbrian coast, he could not have been more pleased.

Lindisfarne Inn head chef Chris Taylor, left, with general manager Peter O'BrienDiners at the Lindisfarne Inn in Beal, Northumberland, are in for a treat this Halloween as pumpkins grown on nearby Holy Island feature on the new autumn menu.

The island is probably better known for its prized oysters and world-famous mead, but pumpkin seeds sown in May have yielded a 300-plant crop of the outsize veggies for Lindisfarne farmer Danny Hodgson.

Danny farms the 240-acre St Coomb's farm on the island with his son, Richard, and business partner Robert Brigham and is well known for his strawberries and maize maze.

Walker hat-trick sees Berwick United to win

Berwick United picked up their first away points in the Northern Alliance Division One by beating Chopwell Officials 4-3.

They had Leigh Walker (hat- trick) and Simon Hargreaves on target with Chopwell replying in vain through Dave Fitzpatrick (2) and Andrew Smith.

With the Division cups taking place, only one North Northumberland League game was played last weekend.

A company redeveloping the grounds of an historic Northumberland building is asking to begin demolition before contracts are signed for the scheme.

Developer Lindisfarne Homes was given planning permission by the former Berwick Borough Council to build 19 homes in the unkempt garden of the town's Grade II listed Governor's House, which dates back to 1719.

The scheme also allowed the demolition of the former Blackburn and Price garage, also on Palace Street East and within Berwick Conservation Area, and its replacement with 47 homes.

Berwick taxi loophole sparks council reforms

Posted by The Journal on Oct 27, 09 09:09 AM in News

A new taxi licensing policy for Northumberland has been agreed in principle, in an effort to avoid a repeat of a recent controversy which sparked a High Court case.

Last year Newcastle City Council took the former Berwick Borough Council to court after Tyneside-based taxi drivers claimed their livelihoods were being threatened.

The trust plans to replace the existing Berwick Infirmary with a new, purpose-built facility and is to take a mobile exhibition trailer to a number of communities.

Soaring Bomber sets new record at Berwick

Posted by The Journal on Oct 26, 09 09:49 AM in Sport

In one of the most enjoyable and fun speedway presentations in recent Berwick history, Coventry's Chris "Bomber" Harris excelled to take the 2009 Bordernapolis Championship, but also blew the circuit's 10-year-old track record out of sight.

Sean Wilson of Sheffield set the 64.2 standard way back on August 21, 1999, but Harris, unexpectedly off the gate in the handicap event's heat 13, jetted away from the tapes like a man possessed.

Nearly a quarter of a lap ahead of a field including Elite League stars Lakeside's Kauko Nieminen and his fellow Coventry Bee and self-confessed Shielfield Park fan Ben Barker with one lap to go, Harris looked amazing hanging on to his bike at stunning speed, recording an astonishing time of 63.8, taking four-tenths off the former record.

A half-time substitution which introduced Fraser McLaren saved Berwick from embarrassment in the Scottish Cup second-round tie played in difficult conditions on an Edinburgh public park.

McLaren scored twice to edge his team ahead but just five minutes from time the lowly East of Scotland league side missed a great opportunity from only six yards out.
