A Jake Lowes goal gave Alnwick the lead at Lowick, but the home team took a share of the points thanks to an equaliser from Andrew Burgon.

Acklington picked up their first win of the season thanks to two goals by Eric McKevitt and single strikes by Aaron Redpath, Wayne Robinson, Richard Lemon and Dell Sawes.

However, it was not all one way as Berwick United Reserves hit back with a Chris Falconer hat-trick and a Michael Robinson goal.

Poet, author and playwright, Valerie Laws, will talk about her debut novel The Rotting Spot at Berwick Library at 7.30pm on Friday October 9.

Light-bellied brent geeseRare geese have turned up early for their winter stay in Northumberland - delivering a tourism boost.

The first flock of light-bellied brent geese has arrived back at the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve after their breeding season on the Arctic island of Svalbard.

With a population estimated at only around 6,000 individuals , these small geese are among the world's rarest birds and attract birdwatchers and wildlife lovers.

Northumbria Healthcare is celebrating the first birthday of modern matrons continuing to drive up standards in all its hospitals across Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Over the past twelve months the 31 highly skilled matrons have been ensuring patients receive first-class nursing care.

They are present in the Trust's three general and seven community hospitals seven-days-a week, supporting ward staff, relatives and carers, making sure they receive the advice, assistance and support they need.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is working with staff at Berwick Infirmary and governors elected to represent local residents, to find out what people want from a new hospital.

The Trust has plans to replace the existing Berwick Infirmary with a new, purpose-built facility and is proposing to take a mobile roadshow to a number of communities later this year.

Zoe Perks, new nurse at Berwick InfirmaryPatients in Berwick Infirmary will see a friendly new face amongst the nursing staff, with newly qualified Zoe Perks starting work at the hospital.

Zoe, from Lowick, had been working as a healthcare assistant at Alnwick Infirmary's outpatients department.

After showing an interest in training to be a registered nurse, the Trust supported Zoe through her studies and, after qualifying, she has successfully gained a place as a nurse at Berwick.

Wild animals such as the beaver and the lynx could be reintroduced to the North East under Government plans to be announced today.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn will call for a "re-wilding" of Britain at the Labour Party conference in Brighton.

Under the scheme, which is still at the review stage, large parts of the UK would be allowed to run wild in an effort to boost conservation and combat biodiversity loss.

Kirkland wins Norham 10k

David Kirkland, recent winner of the Nottingham Robin Hood Half-Marathon, continued his good form with victory in yesterday's Norham 10k.

The Alnwick Harrier won the event for the third time.

Berwick Rangers boss Jimmy Crease is planning to have his troops all fired up for Saturday's top-of-the-table clash against Forfar at Shielfield Park.

He said: "This really is a big, big game. I rate them, and I expect it to be extremely difficult."

Birthday boy Fraser McLaren marked his 21st with the opener in 19 minutes against Montrose. Alan Brazil hammered home from close range for the second after 56 minutes.

Berwick Bandits miss Burza as they lose out

A Berwick Bandits' side without Stanislaw Burza - recalled to his Polish club for a meeting - folded under the strength of the Workington Comets in this Young Shield quarter-final first leg.

Local junior John Macphail replaced Burza. Greg Blair was back in for Gino Franchetti, who was racing in the Italian Grand Prix.

The match itself was, in many people's minds, a foregone conclusion, but a Michal Makovsky win in the opener over the in-form Aussie from Newcastle Mark Lemon and his fellow Diamond Trent Leverington in a 3-3 hushed the critics.
