Campaigners are hoping plans for new hospital services in Northumberland will see more pressure put on the Government to dual the A1.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust wants to build a new emergency care hospital, upgrade North Tyneside and Wansbeck general hospitals and rebuild Haltwhistle community hospital and Berwick Infirmary.

Now, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Berwick and the town's public governor on the trust's board, has called for the A1 to be improved to allow people quicker access to the proposed new hospitals.

Young people are being wooed by the Maltings Theatre, Berwick, with a Maltings Youth Card which becomes available for the first time tomorrow.

If you are 18 or under you can apply for the card which allows you to buy two tickets for the price of one to most live performances and film screenings.

Venue staff believe it is the first such scheme in the country.

Berwick's home record in the Premier League took another bashing.

The Bandits were back to a full squad with Josef Franc back from his international duties, but couldn't rekindle the domination he usually enjoys at Shielfield Park.

It was all square again following Rymel's brilliant outside pass round Franc on bend two of heat 10 as their guest Chris Kerr took Aarnio at the same place in a 2-4, whilst Makovsky's wide pass round Doolan in the 11th kept it at 33-all.

Berwick Rangers kept the pressure on at the top of the Third Division after another victory on their own patch.

"We knew at the start of the season that if we wanted to make an impression this year we would have to win our home games," said manager Jimmy Crease after his side snatched a last gasp goal against Queen's Park at Shielfield.

Porn outrage teacher is back in classroom

A North East teacher who was sacked for accessing pornography on school computers and calling sex lines while he was at work has found a new job in Northumberland.

Darren Adamson lost his job as head of English at Houghton Kepier School in Houghton-le-Spring, near Sunderland, following initial claims of gross misconduct in September 2007.

Now, despite his controversial past, Mr Adamson is teaching at Berwick High School.

The BBC personality features in a video on Northumberland Tourism's relaunched website, offering potential visitors to the region a virtual tour of some of its highlights.

Among the sites explored from spectacular aerial views are Hadrian's Wall, Bamburgh Castle, Berwick, and Lindisfarne.

The Boundary Committee for England has started a second round of public consultation on future arrangements for the county's new unitary council.

Help wanted for Northumberland beach tidy-ups

People in Northumberland are being urged to do their bit to maintain the beauty of the county's beaches.

The county has some of the most picturesque beaches in Britain, such as those at Warkworth, Bamburgh and Alnmouth.

But they can be spolit by litter which in turn can put wildlife at risk.

Vikings v RomansTwo of the most fearsome armies to conquer Northumberland will be going head to head at the weekend.

The strength of the Romans and the ferocity of the Vikings overpowered the county at separate times, with both having long-lasting influences, and both will be explored at two separate events over the coming bank holiday weekend.

From Saturday, August 29 to Monday, August 31, The Making of England - Vikings! event will take visitors to Lindisfarne Priory back in time to experience its less tranquil days when the Vikings invaded Holy Island in AD 793.

Berwick Farmers' Market is back at the Maltings this weekend.

Visitors will be able to buy a wide range of food, from bread to fresh fruit and vegetables, free-range eggs, olives and oils, as well as non-food goods.

The market runs on Sunday August 30 from 10am and 1.30pm.
