Smaller communities should be thinking ahead to the day when they can generate all their own power, energy expert Dr Barbara Sexon believes.
Dr Sexon runs the Thropton Energy consultancy in the Northumberland village of the same name, near Rothbury.

She studied for a PhD 25 years ago on the potential of small scale wind turbines in the days before wind farms of considerably larger machines became the hot potato they are today.
An engine which may have powered a wartime escape mission from Norway to Holy Island has turned up in a Northumberland back garden.
Last month, The Journal told the story of five men who sailed across the North sea in 1941, in a bid to flee the German occupation of their country and join the war effort here.

The amazing journey of Sven Moe and his four accomplices took place in an open boat powered by a single engine.

Berwick Bandits set off at the crack of dawn this morning for the long trek to take on Somerset Rebels tonight in the Premier League at their Oak Tree Arena.
Bandits' promoter John Anderson said: "This track is quite a small track, but it rides like a big one like Peterborough, therefore I feel we could take a few people by surprise tonight and take a league point or two away from the Rebels who we hope to leave without a cause come 9.30 this evening."
Berwick's wildlife is to be investigated to make sure that some of its nocturnal inhabitants will not get in the way of a big anniversary celebration.
