Sir Bobby voted top Northumbrian

World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton has been voted the Greatest Living Northumbrian in a poll on the Your Place microsites.

The Ashington-born footballer won 27% of the votes, beating actor Robson Green (17%) and comedian Ross Noble (15%).

Other nominees in the poll were Sir Bobby's brother Jack, musician Kathryn Tickell, cricketer Steve Harmison, the Duchess of Northumberland and darts commentator Sid Waddell.

A new range of free courses is being launched at centres in the Berwick district later this month by Northumberland College in conjunction with the Berwick Learning Partnership.

The 'bitesize' courses will include Computer Essentials, Introduction to Retail Skills as well as a DIY Introductory Programme and another relating to tourism employment.

They will be available at the college's centre in Berwick; Seahouses Resource Centre and Cheviot Centre in Wooler.

Youngsters from a Berwick school have helped a housing company improve its service.

Berwick Borough Housing (BBH) is currently taking part in National Conversation, a project to ensure that all homes owned by housing associations provide good quality services to their tenants.

Pupils from Tweedmouth Middle School worked with officers from BBH on the project for three days.

Satellite dishes in Berwick cause concern

Satellite dishCriticism is mounting over the rising number of satellite dishes in residential areas in Berwick.

And the Chairman of Berwick Civic Society Do Shaw has raised the issue with Berwick Borough Council and Berwick Town Council.

She described the dishes in several sensitive areas as acts of vandalism and called for enforcement action to be taken.

Berwick festival fee plan

A nominal entrance fee may be charged for visitors to the two-day Berwick Food Festival.

The idea is being considered by the organisers The Slow Food Berwick Group after the costs for last year's inaugural event topped £7,000.

Statistics from the National Trust and English Heritage show North East attractions pulled in more visitors during the February half-term than ever before.

The number of visitors to Lindisfarne Castle, on Holy Island, shot up from 1,059 to 2,362, an increase of 123%.

Assurance over Berwick hospital services

An assurance has been given that hospital services in Berwick will not be downgraded as a result of a massive restructuring programme being planned for the region.

It was given to Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith by the Northumbria Healthcare Trust who are planning to invest £200m in reorganising services over the next 10 years.

Berwick took their unbeaten sequence on to three but they could count themselves lucky to have taken a point against Annan, who have gone eight without reverse.

The visitors controlled most of the second spell of a mediocre game but just could not produce the killer touch.

Police check 2,000 cars near Berwick

More than 2,000 cars have been checked in one day in a police operation on the A1 near Berwick.

Northumbria Police joined with Lothian and Borders Constabulary for an initiative on the A1 between Cockburnspath in Scotland and Berwick that saw checks made using Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

The checks led to 14 cars being stopped for having serious mechanical defects while two lorry drivers were found to be exceeding their driving hours regulations.

Heavy defeat for Berwick ladies

Berwick Ladies Hockey team travelled to Hull for their furthest away game of the season, but the trip was in vain when they lost 8-0.

The long journey took its toll on the Berwick side and with yet more changes they found it difficult to get into their stride.

Berwick started with an early break and put some pressure on the home side's defence but Hull took advantage of the visitors' lack of order by scoring early on the break.
