Granary scheme contract awarded

A Kelso firm has won the contract to carry out a £5m refurbishment of an old granary building in Berwick.

M and J Ballantyne are scheduled to start work on the five-storey Dewar's Lane granary near the town centre early in the New Year.

The granary was built in the mid 18th Century and has been standing empty for over 20 years. The Berwick Preservation Trust has put together the funding package and plans to create a multi-purpose facility which will incorporate a 42-bed youth hostel.

Housing stock to get overhaul

A contractor has been appointed to carry out a £27m overhaul of a Northumberland borough's housing stock.

Berwick Borough Housing (BBH) has chosen Gentoo Construction to refurbish its 1,900 homes, bringing them up to Decent Homes standard over the next five years.

Berwick Borough Council's housing stock was transferred to BBH and partner Three Rivers Housing Association last month. This followed a 78.8% 'yes' vote from 1,753 council tenants last year.

Crash closes Berwick bypass

A man was taken to hospital following a crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

The man was driving a Suzuki Swift which was in collision with an MG ZR on the Berwick bypass near the south-bound junction with the A6105 at around 1.20am on Saturday.

He suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Wansbeck General Hospital by ambulance. No one else was hurt.

Berwick artist opens exhibition

Belford Craft Gallery, between Alnwick and Berwick, will feature 16 artists from the region next year.

Exhibitions start at Easter with work by Berwick artist Katie Bishop, showing with Jenny Calver, of Auchencrow, Berwickshire.

At Whitsun, Peter Podmore, pictured, of West Newton, Wooler, exhibits pastel drawings.

Berwick Bandits complete 2009 line-up

Berwick speedway's 2009 team is complete with the news that Scottish youngster William Lawson has joined, taking the number one slot as the top averaged Bandit for next year.

He joins the Bandits new management who have the faith in his growing ability.

Dave Peet, the Berwick team manager, said: "Signing William is the cherry on our 2009 cake as we know he'll take on the roll of our number one with relish.

Berwick Rangers 3, Montrose 2

Berwick Rangers boss Jimmy Crease rated the victory over Montrose as one of the finest fightbacks he has seen.

And after treating every one of his players as they left the pitch to a standing ovation he said: "They were magnificent."

Berwick, who have won their last four in a row under the guidance of Crease, looked beaten when they went in at the break two down. They then suffered another blow when assistant manager Ian Little was shown a straight red immediately after the interval for a challenge on Hugh Davidson.

Fight goes on for Norham post office

The outlet at Norham, near Berwick, was one of 80 in the region which Post Office Ltd deemed surplus to requirements in August.

Bosses decided to close the branch and replace it with an outreach service for residents two hours a day, five days a week.

Permission sought for Berwick houses

Plans have been entered for the erection of seven new units on a Northumberland business park.

Michael Guthrie has applied to Berwick Borough Council for planning permission for the industrial units on a plot at the Ramparts park in Berwick.

New village hall for Bowsden

A new village hall is also to be built at Bowsden near Berwick, Northumberland, after the local community was awarded a lottery grant of £230,000.

It will replace the existing hall which was built more than 80 years ago and no longer meets modern regulations.

Work on the new hall, which residents say is vital in a community where there is no village shop or pub, will start in the spring and is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

Opposition is mounting to controversial proposals to reduce staffing levels at the museum and art gallery in Berwick.

The idea is being considered by the new unitary council for Northumberland as a direct result of major financial constraints.

However, a spokeswoman for the Friends of the Museum and Art Gallery said they will fight to retain the services of a full-time curator and technician.
