Museum visitors are being offered the chance to view a very private collection.

The Undercover Story exhibition at Berwick Museum and Art gallery is dedicated to the history of underwear throughout the ages.

From the corsets of the Victorians to the generous bloomers worn during the American Civil War, the exhibition boasts a brief history of undergarments.

Jim Herbert, from the museum, said: "The Undercover Story is a new and unusual exhibition that will take people down memory lane. The response from visitors has been very positive.

"It features a selection of undergarments and related images collected by the two ladies that started the project, Naomi Kenny from Berwick and Priscilla Elias from Alnwick.

"It is their aim to rescue pre-1965 undergarments to document the stories behind what is usually a very private world and to set up a permanent home for the collection, hopefully in Berwick.

"Clothing is an integral part of social history and the dedicated collection of these items will form an invaluable resource for people in the years to come.

"Berwick Museum is pleased to be able to host this exhibition and to support the project in its ambitions."

The Underwear Project is also asking anyone with any items they would like to donate to do so by contacting the museum.

The Undercover Story will run on Wednesdays to Sundays until the 28th September at Berwick Museum and Art Gallery, Berwick Barracks, Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The museum is open from 10am until 5pm and admission is £3.50 for adults, £2.80 for concessions and £1.80 for children.
