Artist explores Berwick's history
A DESERTED World War II pillbox, an obsolete British car manufacturer and the 1920s heyday of seaside resorts are all re-interpreted at a contemporary art exhibition in Berwick.
As Old As The Industry, As Modern As The Hour explores themes of modernity, heritage and regeneration and runs until October 31 at English Heritage's Berwick Gymnasium Art Gallery.
The exhibition is the work of emerging artist Laura Napier, who was awarded an English Heritage Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship in 2007 and spent the winter months developing an imaginative and ambitious response to the border town's unique history, architecture and identity.
The exhibition has transformed the Gymnasium Gallery, creating a maze of specially constructed interiors - a gem shop, a mine, smugglers' tunnel and a car showroom.
Laura has also designed and displayed two banners in Berwick.
The first, entitled And It's From The Old I Travel To The New, is displayed in the windows of the 19th century wholesalers Cowes and Sons, and was made in collaboration with the Berwick Baptist Banner Group.
Her other effort is called The Past We Inherit, The Future We Forge.
