A COUNCILLOR in Berwick has resigned from his party amid claims it put money before the interests of his town.

Coun John Robertson has opted to leave the Liberal Democrat group on Berwick Borough Council, to which he was elected last May, and join the Independents.

The move follows the controversial decision of the council, on which the Lib Dems are the largest group, to sell off Berwick's Quayside car park to regional development agency One NorthEast.

BERWICK Bandits head south tonight for a vital Premier League match at the Birmingham Brummies looking to rescue a season that has gone somewhat off the rails.

The Bandits' only away win to date has been at the league's whipping boys, Mildenhall, and they will need to improve considerably on that if they are to secure an end-of-season play-off spot.

A PLANNING inspector who will hear an inquiry on a proposed Northumberland wind farm last night warned appellants that the Ministry of Defence's opposition could be impossible to overcome.

David Cullingford was speaking at a pre-inquiry hearing into RidgeWind Ltd's appeal against Berwick Borough Council's refusal of its planning application to site 10 turbines at Wandylaw, near Chathill last October.

A SECOND appeal has been lodged following the refusal of three wind farm applications near Berwick.

Separate bids for turbines at Barmoor, Moorsyde and Toft Hill, all near Berwick, were refused by local planners at a joint hearing in March.

The Journal reported last week how the applicants for the Barmoor scheme had appealed and that a public inquiry will take place before a Government planning inspector.

George CowanTHE notion that nice guys come last went by the board at the Berwick club yesterday when George Cowan, a former Northumberland champion, moved to within one step of The Open Championship.

Cowan played Good Samaritan for caddie Stuart Harrison after shooting a three-under 69 over the Goswick Links.

After his early-morning round, the assistant at the Westerhope club drove Harrison back to Ponteland - as the caddie had to play for his club in the Hadrian League last night - knowing that if a play-off situation arose, he would have to drive all the way back to Goswick.

The top 11 yesterday went through to Local Final Qualifying in Lancashire next week with the championship itself starting at Royal Birkdale the week after that.
